Autumn Durald Arkapaw ASC on filming Sinners in Ultra Panavision 70 and IMAX

In conversation with Dan Sasaki, the cinematographer discusses her large-format collaboration with director Ryan Coogler.

“A movie to me is the lenses — the lenses and the lighting,” says Autumn Durald Arkapaw ASC. The cinematographer recently visited Panavision Woodland Hills for a live conversation with Dan Sasaki, Panavision’s Senior Vice President of Optical Engineering and Lens Strategy, focusing on her collaboration with writer-director Ryan Coogler on the acclaimed feature Sinners.

Together, Durald Arkapaw and Sasaki discuss the evolution of the film’s visual language, including the pivot away from Super 16mm — which the cinematographer had used on her previous project, director Gia Coppola’s feature The Last Showgirl — to 5- and 15-perf 65mm with Ultra Panatar 1.3x anamorphics and modified IMAX lenses. The conversation also explores the importance of working closely with visual effects, reveals the meaning of “steez” as it relates to lens design, and explains why Sinners’ working title was Grilled Cheese.
